Music by female composers is a focal point of this year’s festival, and we are pleased to offer two workshops led by leading concert organists and professors, both held at the late-Romantic, three-manual Lundén organ in the Vasa Church. Over the past few years, thanks to projects such as the Boulanger Initiative, works by women composers have appeared with greater regularity on concert programs. The workshop led by Isabelle Demers will examine works by 19th- and 20th-century composers such as Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn, Nadia Boulanger, Elsa Barraine, and Rachel Laurin.

Breath and bellows: the Medieval portative organ
Catalina Vicens
Monday October 12, 9:00–11:30
Tuesday October 13, 9:00–11:30
(Venue TBA)
(Organ TBA)
This workshop introduces students to the unique mechanics and expressive potential of the medieval portative organ. Participants will learn the pathways to master the fundamental technique of coordinating hand-pumped air supply with keyboard articulation. Through a curated selection of vocal repertoire from the 12th to 14th centuries, students will explore how to translate the nuances of the human voice—dynamic swells, breath points, and textual emphasis—into instrumental performance. The curriculum emphasizes the intimate connection between physical movement and sound production, enabling players to achieve a singing tone that captures the spirit of medieval monophony and early polyphony.
